Triumph was of all things British but had a background of German origin. In 1886 a German gentleman called Bettman named his company the Triumph Cycle Company and was later re-named the New Triumph Co.Ltd. In 1902 the new company produced it's first motorcycle and fitted with a Begian unit. The following year sales topped 500, amazingly good for those days. By the mid-1920s Triumph had grown into one of Britain's leading motorcycle and car makers, with a 500,000 square feet plant producing up to 30,000 motorcycles and cars each year.

The Triumph Bonneville was made famous by Marlin Brando, Richard Gere, and Clint Eastwood in their respective classic movies not forgetting Steve McQueen in the 1963 movie "The Great Escape" being acclaimed to be one of the best War movies ever made. Triumph found its bikes in high demand overseas, and export sales became a primary source of the company's revenues, although for the United States, Triumph models were manufactured under license. Triumph has always had its own distinctive character and a long history of creating bikes that become design classics since they first came to market in the 1900s. Last year Triumph sold over thirty one thousand motorcycles across the globe a real success story . Triumph is apparently seriously challenging Harley Davidson in the USA.

Some of the popular models are the Bonneville,Daytona, Rocket III, Sprint, Speed Triple, Thunderbird, Tiger, Trident and Trophy.

Many of the classic Triumph motorcycles tend to hold or increase their value.

The Thunderbird has been an icon of motorcycling since it was first unleashed on the world by Triumph. You may think of the Ford Thunderbird when you hear that name, but it was Triumph who licensed the name to the American auto company for use on their new 1955 'personal luxury car' coupe.

The first Triumph model designated 'Thunderbird' was produced in 1949; it was called the Thunderbird 6T and was powered by a 649c.c. engine. This model run lasted until 1966. In 1981, the Thunderbird TR65 began production with an identically sized, but vastly different, engine. The 885c.c. Thunderbird of 1994 was more in tune with the original purpose of lead designer Edward Turner, who developed the bike mostly for the American market. If that model was up to the task, then the Thunderbird Sport took it to a new level in 1997; 82hp and 56ft/lb of torque originated from the triple 885c.c. engine - more than enough to make it a quality sport/tour motorcycle.

This is Triumph's past but very relevant history - as it leads us to the 2010 Thunderbird 1600. This hefty power cruiser takes the name forward and manages to keep the original spirit of the breed.

However, if you are looking for parts for that early T-bird you will not find them from the Hinckley factory. As with most manufacturers, you will have to search for NOS (new old stock) parts wherever you look for such items - dealer networks, local shops, and more and more these days, the Internet. The Internet is becoming an amazing international hunting ground for tracking down those hard-to-find parts.

The good news is that Triumph does have parts for all models produced from 1993 onwards, meaning just about every motorcycle produced at Hinckley. Every part made by Triumph is of the highest quality and is made to the exact stock specifications of the model to which it belongs. Triumph manages to keep a first pick rate of 99% throughout its network - the highest in the industry. Within a matter of days - if your part is not in stock at your local shop - Triumph can have any one of over 25,000 parts shipped directly to your dealer.

Additionally, the Genuine Accessories available from Triumph are included in the same ordering system - so, you will see the same quality of craftsmanship and get your hands on them fast. For example, if you own a new 2010 Thunderbird and you think that 98 cubic inches is too small; within days you can have a 104 cubic inch Big Bore Kit ready to be installed.

If you own a Triumph Thunderbird and you need parts or accessories, your solution is as close as your nearest Triumph authorized dealer ... or even right here on your computer screen.

It's ironic that the archetypal British Motorbike owes its existence to a German. Triumph wouldn't be Triumph without Seigfried Bettmann.

History sometimes throws up some strange truths, no more so than that which tells us, that the most British of motorcycles owes its existence to a German. One Seigfried Bettmann, an immigrant from Nuremberg, began a company named the 'S.Betmann & Co. Import Export Agency' in London in 1884. As an ambitious 20 year old, Bettmann bought and sold bicycles and imported sewing machines from Germany. In 1886, when he changed the name of the company to the 'Triumph Cycle Company', a name synonymous with British bikes was born. A further name change along with financial backing from Dunlop a year later, saw the birth of the 'New Triumph Co. Ltd'. Another significant development of that same year was the arrival of fellow countryman Moritz Schulte.

With encouragement and capital from Schulte, Bettman purchased a site in Coventry, and in 1889, began building the first bicycles to carry the Triumph badge, but it wasn't until 1902 that the marquee was attached to a motorcycle. This first motorbike was in fact a bicycle fitted with a Belgian engine. In 1903, as production rose to more than 500 units, Triumph began building machines in their German factory. At the outset, the company built motorbikes based on models from other manufacturers, however, in 1904/5 Triumph came up with their own design which reached sales of 250.

When production topped 1,000, the company opened a larger factory and launched the 'Gloria' brand, aimed at the lower end of the market. At this time, a decision was made to rebrand the German made motorbikes as 'Orial'. Unfortunately, 'Orial' already existed in France, so the company became 'TWN'; 'Triumph Werke Nurnberg'.

As so often happens, conflict brings dividends to some, and Triumph flourished during the First World War, supplying in excess of 30,000 units to the allies. It was at this time that the Model H Roadster gained its tag of 'The Trusty Triumph'. The irony of two Germans producing the archetypal British motorbike to fight the Kaiser has been lost on many. After the war, Bettmann and Schulte couldn't agree about the issue of car manufacture, and Schulte decided to leave the company. In 1920, the company bought the former Hillman car factory in Coventry, and by 1923 had produced the first car bearing the name of The Triumph Motor Company.

By the middle of the 20's, the company had grown into one of the leading car and motorcycle producers in the country, with a capacity of 30,000 cars and motorcycles annually. However, the good times were about to end with the arrival of the Great Depression. The German arm became a separate company and continued producing TWN motorbikes until 1957. The bicycle manufacturing side of the company was sold to Raleigh in 1932, and Bettmann was under pressure. He retired in 1933.

In 1936, the car and motorcycle sectors were separated and became independent companies. The car division had always struggled to make a profit, and went bankrupt in 1939, finally being purchased by the Standard Motor Company. The motorcycle division found things easier, and after being acquired by Jack Sangster, the owner of the rival Ariel Company, began exporting machines to the USA. Sangster brought his design team with him, including Edward Turner, the designer of the 500cc Speed Twin, which became the bedrock for all Triumph twins until the 1980's. Coventry remained the home of Triumph motorcycles until the Second World War, however, the city was all but destroyed by German bombing, and moved to a new plant at Meridan, West Midlands in 1942.

The post war years were Triumph's Golden days, and the company received a huge fillip when Marlon Brando rode a Thunderbird 6T in the film 'The Wild One'. In 1951, the company was sold to rivals BSA, with Sangster becoming a member of the BSA board. Eventually, he rose to the position of Chairman.

After struggling to compete with Japanese imports, the company's fortunes declined, and after various changes in ownership, was acquired by former plasterer John Bloor in 1983. He was determined to keep the company alive, and preserve the title of ' The World's Longest Continuous Production Motorcycle Manufacturer'. The new company was initially named 'Bonneville Coventry Ltd.'. Spares manufacturer Lee Harris continued with production of the Triumph Bonneville until 1988. Triumph now produce a range of motorcycles that preserve the past model names, such as the Bonneville Twin.

Triumph has produced many legendary motorcycles in its 107 year existence - the longest continual production of any bike manufacturer in the world. Those models have become known even to people who know very little about two-wheeled transportation. The Bonneville is an example; everyone knows it and most want one. While not as well known as the 'Bonny', the Thunderbird is just as popular with people who do know about Triumph.

First produced in 1949, the Triumph Thunderbird 6T became a seminal model in the Triumph family. It was the bike which made Triumph an American favorite - Triumph sold more motorcycles in the US after 1950 than they did in any other country. Some of those sales were helped by an actor in a film which Triumph did not want to be part of - Marlon Brando in The Wild One. The movie depicted bikers as hooligans and Triumph wanted nothing to do with that image, and rightly so. However, Brando's personal 1950 Thunderbird was prominently displayed in the film and it certainly did not hurt sales.

The first model of Thunderbird was based on a bored-out and redesigned Speed Twin. Managing director and lead designer Edward Turner was designing a motorcycle for the American market, so he wanted it to be larger and more comfortable than then current models. He succeeded quite well. The Thunderbird 6T was produced from 1949 until 1966; during that time it went through three significant updates. It was a very popular long-distance tourer as riders added accessories and took the T-Bird anywhere they wanted to go.

The first attempt at bringing back the name was a desperate maneuver to produce a fuel-efficient 'economy' model, the Thunderbird TR65. This was, in fact, just a short-stroke (650c.c.) version of the T-140 Bonneville, which was cheaper to insure and sipped gas at 54 mpg. It was only around for three model years and Triumph hit hard times afterward.

Another Thunderbird started rolling off the production line in 1994. It was called the Thunderbird 900 and was based on the 885c.c. triple which had been successfully used in other 'Hinckley' Triumph models for about four years. With 'classical styling', two-tone paint, a historic Triumph tank badge and 'pea shooter' type exhausts, it reminded us all of the old Thunderbird 6T. It was a sales success and its up-graded Sport 900 model made the machine even more adept at carving the roads on which it rode. The last 900 Thunderbird was built in 2004.

In 2009, rumors circulated everywhere in the industry about a new, larger Thunderbird. It turned out to be true and Triumph launched the model year 2010 Triumph 1600 twin. With a huge powerplant - two cylinders of 800c.c. each - and a very comfortable riding position, the Thunderbird lives again!

If ever there were more evocative words to a Triumph fan, I have not heard them yet. If you are looking to purchase a Bonneville, you should give some serious thought to what, exactly, you are looking for as there are several variations among the 50 years worth of models.

First, you could consider the T120 Bonneville of 1959. All versions of this model came equipped with a 650c.c. pushrod parallel-twin. It was designed to be a powerful road bike, with high-end carburetors, high-performance intake cam, and eventually unit construction which allowed for the engine to be more compact thus providing a better center of gravity. Triumph called it "The Best Motorcycle in the World." That informed the public that Triumph was not playing around here. It was developed in record time and then went on to record sales. This means that it is possible to find very clean and well-maintained examples on the market since so many were manufactured.

The later T140 Bonneville was even more powerful and better handling. Production of this model ran from 1973 up to the closing of the Meriden factory in 1988. It had a 724c.c. or 744c.c. engine depending on the production year and the same basic configuration as the T120, but with a 5-speed transmission. During this model run, many updates were applied, so finding a specific set of features can be tough. Disc brakes were available on later models and from 1982 it had a dual-disc setup. Also of note, in 1975 Triumph switched the shift-gear from the right side to the left - in accordance with US regulations at the time - and added a rear disc brake. You will find many examples which still retain the kick-starter as electric starters were not added until 1980.

A much tougher find for anyone outside of the United Kingdom, is the so-called "Devon Bonnevilles" made from 1985 through 1988. These were produced in the garage of Les Harris in Devon, U.K, thus the name. The new owner of Triumph, John Bloor, had signed off on this in order to keep interest in the marque high and continue at least some production.

Finding 'Hinckley' Bonnevilles is a bit easier, and the new ownership is to be commended on the resurrection of the Bonneville in 2001. This was the Bonneville 790 and it maintained the overall classic look of the early models, yet the technology of the machine was most certainly from the 21st century. This Bonnie should be much easier to locate as they were produced from 2001 until 2007 and were shipped worldwide. A higher-spec model was developed in 2006 and called the T100 Bonneville - named so for the top speed rating of 100 mph. It featured an 865c.c. parallel-twin engine which, in 2007, became the standard engine in every Bonneville. In 2008, fuel-injection was added to all models yet the look of a carbureted motorcycle was retained by faux throttle bodies over the injection system - form and function!

If you are looking for rare examples of the 'Hinckley' Bonneville, there are plenty to choose from now. 2006 saw a very limited Paul Smith personally designed nine signature series bikes to display in his shops throughout England; from these, two were selected to be produced in limited quantities ('Multi-Union' and 'Live Fast' - 50 of each). In 2008 we were rewarded with the Bonneville SE, or Special Edition, which featured matching speedometer and tachometer, cast wheels, blacked-out engine and more special features. It was really made to evoke the spirit of the T140D from 1979. Then we come to the latest 'special' out of Hinckley; the Bonneville 50th Anniversary special of which only 650 were built.
